A practical month-end close checklist for growing firms

What this checklist covers:
- Prepare data before the close begins
- Resolve exceptions in a consistent order
- Finish with insights the client can use
A reliable close depends less on heroic effort and more on a clear sequence. When every team member knows what must be complete, what can wait, and who owns each exception, month-end becomes faster and easier to review.
Prepare before the close
Confirm that bank feeds are current, source documents are available, and recurring transactions have posted. Ask clients for missing information before the final week whenever possible. A short preparation step prevents most delays later.
- Confirm bank and card feeds are connected
- Collect missing invoices and receipts
- Review uncategorized transactions
- Check that payroll and sales systems have synced
Review exceptions by risk
Work through exceptions according to their effect on the financial statements. Start with unusual cash movements, unreconciled balances, duplicate transactions, and large changes from the previous month. This keeps attention on the items most likely to change the final result.
Turn the close into advice
The close should end with a short explanation of what changed and what needs attention next. Highlight cash movements, margin changes, overdue receivables, and any operational pattern that the client can act on before the next close.
- Summarize the three largest changes
- Explain why each change happened
- Recommend one clear next action
- Schedule the follow-up before the next close
